Judging by the amount of times I've mentioned his novels on my posts, you all have probably guessed already that F. Scott Fitzgerald is my favourite writer, I fell in love with every single word of his that day we had to read The Beautiful and the Damned in English class; it may sound cliché; but I can't really help it - each an everyone of his novels is simply amazing.
It seems that the world has been suffering a strong case of Gatsby fever lately - the classroom reenactments, the themed parties, the Deco ads for jewelry and tweeds... but no feat of anticipation quite matches the dizzy, winded fervor of the film itself. Like I said in a previous post, Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s canonic novel about jazz age aspiration and decay, had the world going mad.
Yesterday I finally decided to go to the cinema and watch The Great Gatsby; many have qualified it as a 'not-so-great' film (It's currently rated at 49% on Rotten Tomatoes... Fitzgerald is probably rolling in his grave). Not every Baz Luhrmann film can be as perfect as Romeo + Juliet, but I have to say I completely disagree with all the bad reviews it's receiving - the movie went beyond all my expectations, it was pure extravagance, I was instantly catapulted into a captivating world of super-rich people, with their excesive parties, illusions and deceptions, impossible love stories, incorruptible dreams and tragedies. The soundtrack is unbelievably amazing (including artists from Lana del Rey to The xx, it couldn't be otherwise) And it’s also well-served by its cast, with the character of the careless, fickle Daisy Buchanan in Carey Mulligan's hands, Leonardo DiCaprio *sigh* playing the role of the mysterious, millionaire Jay Gatsby and many others, such as Tobey Maguire, a pink-faced Joel Edgerton or Elizabeth Debicki to name a few. What else can I say?
Now, we all know the style of the Roaring Twenties is particularly appealing when it comes to beauty - with carefully-crafted fragrance bottles and powder puffs making perfect dressing table adornments - don't we? So why not listen to Mr. Gatsby and try to 'repeat the past'? I've put together a selection of some beauty products fit for any aspiring flapper girl perfect for creating that modern-day Daisy Buchanan look, enjoy!
